HER LIFE

以善意衡量的一生

Sarah was born on a March morning in 1954, in a small hospital overlooking the Willamette River. Her mother liked to say Sarah arrived early and kept arriving early for everything for the rest of her life — first to class, first to volunteer, first to arrive with a casserole when a neighbor was grieving.

She met David at a college folk-dance night in 1974. He stepped on her foot twice before she agreed to a second dance, and he never let her forget that she said yes anyway. They married two years later in her parents' backyard, under a tent that nearly blew away in a spring storm. Everyone remembers the laughter.

教育不是照着教案走,而是看见那个需要被看见的孩子。

For thirty-one years, Sarah taught fourth grade at Maplewood Elementary. Former students still stopped her at the grocery store — the poet, the nurse, the boy who couldn't read until March of fourth grade and later graduated from law school. She kept every letter they sent her in a shoebox she called her “retirement fund.”

Mom, I found the shoebox of letters today. You really did keep every single one. I read four before I could see the pages through the tears. Theo starts fourth grade next month — I asked for Room 12.

Fifty years ago you agreed to a second dance with a boy who couldn't dance. It remains the best decision anyone has ever made on my behalf.

Mrs. Johnson taught me to read in the spring of 1991. I'm a lawyer now. I never got to tell her. I'm telling all of you instead.

Sarah taught me how to be part of a family that wasn't mine. Twenty years later I still hear her in the way Emily says “we'll figure it out.”
