Home ritual safety checklist for Chinese families abroad

The five-minute check

• Check lease, building, dormitory or venue rules for incense, candles and burning
• Check smoke alarms, ventilation, children, pets and nearby flammable materials
• Follow current signs and staff directions in cemeteries, temples, parks and community venues
• Check allergies, dietary restrictions and waste rules before offering food
• Get consent before sharing photos; do not expose names, wishes, birth details or memorial information

When flame is not allowed

• Use water, flowers, a handwritten letter or quiet reading
• Use a self-contained battery light without blocking exits or detectors
• Reserve incense and paper offerings for permitted, supervised places
• Meaning comes from whom you remember and what you choose to do, not the size of a flame

For schools and community organisers

• Publish fire, food, allergen, photography and accessibility arrangements in advance
• Separate cultural learning from religious participation and allow observation or alternatives
• Do not collect or publish wishes, memorials or family data without consent
• For minors, have guardians confirm image and data use

Short citation
